Carbon Fiber & Braces and Why They Solve The Problem

In this video, Stephen and the Waterproof Team are in a Cast-in-place foundation that has visible older repairs, some of which are causing more problems than they’re solving.

Listen as Stephen explains the problem with attaching the basment walls to the wooden structure and why it’s important to allow there to be a certain amount of give between the two. This is a large job that will include moving the sump pump, piering the house, and adding beams. They will also be addressing issues with a neighbor’s home as well as poor drainage methods are affecting both structures.


What are we in? We’re in a cast-in-place foundation. That’s poured concrete, probably 3,000 PSI concrete. But what does that mean? It means it’s really strong as it stands tall as long as it’s not pushed on. The front walls had some deflection on it, and there was some carbon fiber put on it.

Matter of fact, there was a lot of carbon fiber put on it. Some of it was put on better than other parts. That’s not what we’re here to talk about. What we’re here to talk about is when the brackets were put on the top here, that pins the top of the wall in.

So what we don’t want is we don’t want too much deflection to come in to where we have the wall completely caving in in the center because it’s been pinned in at the top. So this is already starting to break and to move this way. We can see here where we pulled off some of this carbon, the crack is right there and it’s sheared. So the house has twisted, and we see the twist marks here in the footing. We also see the gapping in the footing. So what we have is we got a plumbing leak that was in the backside.

So the garage floor is coming out. We’re getting a new garage floor. We’re peering that. Behind there, there’s a plumbing room, and it’s all up above. All that plumbing comes through and over here. The old pump used to be here, and we were down. All that plumbing coming through here. So that all flooded, ended up pushing these footings down. That’s part of our Y. Now we’re tight here. As we can see, we have a nice tight bite, and we don’t over here. It starts to get a little worse. So in essence, there’s going to be some cracks that are going to get repaired on this house. We’re going to get all the house completely, structurally tight again. We’re going to pier the entire house. We’re going to be putting beams at both ends where the loads will come straight down and then the pier legs. And then there’ll be five braces put on the front wall. That way we can stop lateral movement. We can stop up and down. We stop the water. Outside, it’s a French drain. There’ll be some more soil brought up against this to make sure the Earth pitches away. We’re going to do some things to the neighbor’s house.

We would enhance this house, but it is for the neighbor’s house to help them with water flowing away, as well as working on their gutters because they actually have the guards on them. So some additional work is going to come into play here, but the house will be tight, it’ll be level, it won’t be strong on one end and not the other. So this is Steven with Waterproof Solutions.
